On Saturday,25/7/07,I attended my school's renaissance gold concert which coincided with the SJI Military Band's 50th anniversary. All secondary ones had to attend the concert and the concert was also open to the public. I made my way to the University Cultural Centre which was the venue of the concert just in the nick of time. The secondary ones were seated on the third level and my friends and I were seated at the circle.
The concert was the most sensational one I have ever attended. The concert started with a big bang when the bandsmen played loud notes on the drums, trumpets and other musical instruments. The first song was well received by the entire audience in which they clapped loudly and screamed for more. The rest of the other songs were also very nice and the audience clapped loudly after every song.
Personally, I felt that out of all the wonderful songs that were played, the "pirates of the carribean" song was the best. It had a really nice rhythm to it and the audience was completely immersed in the song. I was swaying to its rhythm and thoroughly enjoying the song. I also felt that the "fumblers" song was fantastic. It was a song to make fun of all the embarrassing mistakes the bandsmen made in the past. It was so hilarious that it made the audience roar with laughter. It was also one thing that I did not really expect in a band performance.
The audience was captivated by all the musical pieces played by the bandsmen and yearned for more after each piece was played. Their eyes were glued to the bandsmen who were playing their best. However, this only applied to the audience in the first and second level. The rowdy secondary ones in the third level became fidgety after half an hour into the concert. Thus, they started to make a lot of noise and this really disrupted the concert. Fortunately, the noise created was not so loud that it could be heard distinctively at the first and second levels. The noise level, however, at the third level was quite loud and this annoyed those who were really appreciating the music.
Mrs Kwok, our english and literature teacher, had to stand in front of those rowdy secondary ones before they kept their mouth shut. She even had to send a few secondary ones out so that those people would not spoil the concert. I feel that SJI should enforce more discipline so that next time when they have such a big event like this, the students will be more well behaved and not ruin the school's name by misbehaving themselves.
Brian. He was on stage performing at the first part of the renaissance concert. Though I could not see his face clearly, I could distinguish him from the other bandsmen when he came on stage as he was my classmate. Although he was the smallest in size among the rest of the bandsmen, I could still see that he was playing wholeheartedly and was concentrating very hard on the notes needed to be played. This shows that size is not a factor determining how well you can do in a particular area.
In my opinion, I would have preferred the SJI PAC as the venue rather than the University Cultural Centre if it was not for this large scale event. I feel more at home at the SJI PAC than the UCC. However, the PAC is not large enough to accommodate half of the school and the public. I'm also quite okay with the UCC as the venue for the event. The UCC has very fabulous lightings which it can boast of which the SJI PAC doesn't. Thus, the UCC is quite appropriate for the venue.
Overall, I am quite happy with the concert with the exception of the noise made by the secondary ones. It is also one of the most hair-raising and fantastic concert I've ever attended and I look forward to the next concert SJI is going to hold.
